Fly-fishing Equipment
Fly-fishing can be very enjoyable and relaxing. It’s much different from regular fishing, so you will need some special fly fishing equipment before going on your fly-fishing trip. Some of the equipment that you will need is a rod, reel, flies, vest, and your tackle supplies.
When it comes to buying a good rod, you will need to keep in mind what kind of fishing you plan on doing. If you are planning to catch some big fish or do some tropical fishing, you will need a rod that will support that type of catch. You can find out what rod would be best for you by asking for the salesman’s recommendation or maybe a friend that fly-fishes also. Once you have your rod, you will then need to pick out the reel.
| Reels can be tricky to pick because you have to consider so many different things when it comes to picking the right reel for you and your rod. First, you need a reel that will match the line that you plan on using. This is also determined by where you are fishing and what type of fish you will be trying to catch or encounter. |
In addition, you will need to choose between two types of cranking action either a single or multiple. If you are not sure, a multiple crank will allow you to pull the line in faster. You will want to consider the arbor or the center of the reel too. This goes back to the cranking action of your preference. A drag system is usually recommended for fly fisherman.
The drag is what will put more resistance on the line and stop it from being pulled by the catch. For larger fish, a disk drag reel is usually recommended. You will also want to take in consideration of the type of water you will be fishing in. If you are fishing in saltwater, you will want a brass wheel because this will help your reel to stay in good shape. It won’t corrode as much as other reels.
As for a vest, you want to have a vest that fits you the best and that allows you to carry all the things like cutters and flies that you will need on your trip. Make sure that the vest does not go below your waist because if you trudge through water your vest and fishing supplies will become wet and ruined. You will also want to think about ventilation. If you are fishing in the hot sun, you will want a vest that won’t make you overheated. Now if you are planning a trip to Alaska or such, you may want to purchase the heavier vest so that you can stay warm.
Tackle supplies can be so many different things. You will definitely need flies and some pliers or tools to recover your hook from the fish. You may also need some line and some applications to make your flies more durable.
Your tackle supplies will depend on the type of fish that you are encountering because some fish you will need the fly to go below the surface to attract the fish and others simple need to touch the top of the water. Depending on how long you will be out will depend on how much supplies and other things that you need.
If you are a beginning fly-fisherman, get several people’s opinion or ask the salesman. Remember, while your asking about your supplies and tackle, you may even pick up some good fly-fishing tips.
