Fly fishing Rods

If you are an experienced fly fisherman, you will know that there are several different sizes and purposes for a fly fishing rod.  Most are designed for a specific task or type of fish.  The size of a rod is linked to the size or number of the line you are using.  A line number is the weight of the line.  Therefore, if you have purchased a seven in lines than it’s weight is seven.  Remember, the bigger the number, the heavier the line, and the harder it will be to cast.  If you want a rod that is suitable for streams or ponds, then just stay in the medium lines and rods.  This is usually around six.

When it comes to purchasing a fly fishing rod you will want to follow some tips.  Since you are most likely a beginner, buy a graphite rod because it will be light and pliable.  Usually, they are more durable and best suited for a beginner.  They can be expensive started just below maybe a hundred dollars.  Next, determine the action of the rod that you want.  This is referring to the resistance of the rod.  They come in three settings fast, medium, and slow.  It is highly recommended for beginners to use a medium-action rod.  It should be easier for you to handle the rod.

Next, you will want to check the bend of the rod.  Is it smooth?  It doesn’t matter what the action of the rod is, it should be able to bend smoothly.  If you notice that there is an excess bend, it is most likely flawed.  The next step will depend entirely on you.  You will want to choose a nice length that is fit to your comfort level. Anticipate the weather and water you might run into.

If you think that there isn’t a lot of room to cast, then choose a smaller length.  By you should feel comfortable with the length of the rod no matter what weather or conditions you may run into at your favorite spot.  To feel comfortable, you should not be afraid to practice a cast or two in the store.  This will allow you to get the feel of the rod.  You should also be able to pick a rod that you feel in control of by casting once or twice.

Choosing your rod is especially important to the comfort of enjoyment of your fishing experience.  You don’t need to buy an expensive rod to begin with, you should just pick a rod that you feel comfortable casting and that is made for the type of fishing you are planning on doing.  If you are unsure about any of your choices, then just always pick the medium.

By doing this, you should be able to find a rod that will make your trip very exciting and enjoyable. If you still feel unsure about any purchasing decision, then don’t be afraid to ask a salesman because you are most likely guaranteed to hear some exciting stories or fishing tips.
