Fly fishing knots
When it comes to fly fishing and tying knots, you should know that it is very important. If you have a poorly tied knot, you will lose fish and it will ruin your entire trip. Learning how to tie a fly fishing knot is just as important as learning how to cast. Once you have mastered casting, what’s the point if you are just going to lose the fish anyway? That’s why you need to learn how to tie some knots. When it comes to fly fishing you need to know how to tie the arbor knot, Albright knot, nail knot, surgeons knot, and a clinch knot.
For the arbor knot, you want to secure the backing to the spool. As you know, backing is used so that you can secure your line and not have some fish running off with it. It is made in 20 and 30 pound strengths of Dacron.
Next, you will want to know how to do an Albright knot. This is used to connect your fly line to you backing. The Albright knot is used because both the backing and the line are made of different materials.
Then you will want to use a nail knot is used to attach your leader to your fly line. If you aren’t aware of what a leader is, it is what turns the fly over during your cast. A nail knot is used because it can leave your leader perfectly in line with your fly line. It is important that you tie a proper nail knot to have good casting. Your casting accuracy is effective by your knot.
It is so important it is best to give you tips on how to make the perfect nail knot. First, you will want to hold the tube and the end of your fly line with your thumb and forefinger. You will want about two inches of line and the tube to stick out to the right. Then take your right hand and form about a two inches loop in the heavier end of your leader. Then pinch down and hold the loop with your two fingers next to the line and tube.
Next, you use your right hand to take the short leg of the leader loop and make five tight wraps over the tube and line. The wraps should be up against each other and at least half an inch from the end of the fly line. Now slide your left thumb and forefinger to hold the wraps and prevent them from undoing. You will need to do this while you work the tag end of the leader through the tube from your right to left. Then remove the tube by sliding it to the left.
Finally, partially tighten the knot by a gentle pull on both ends of the leader. Moisten the knot and then inspect the wraps to make sure they are smooth and tight. Then tighten the knot. You can then trim off the leader tag end and the fly line end.
Finally, it is important that you learn how to do the surgeons knot so you can connect your tippet to your leader and the clinch knot to connect your fly and tippet together.
